Bow - The front end of a boat
Bridge - The control station from which a large boat is navigated
Bulkhead - A transverse wall in the hull

Cast Off - To undo all mooring lines in preparation for departure
Cleat - A metal fitting to which mooring lines are attached
Chop - Short steep waves in an abrupt motion
Cockpit - An open space aft of a decked area from which a small boat is steered
Companionway - A hatch or entrance from the deck to the cabin

Davit - A crane that projects over the side or stern of a boat and is used as a hoist
Dead ahead - In a direction exactly ahead
Deadrise - The height of the angle formed at the transom by the shape of a V-hull

Ditty bag - A small bag used for tools and personal items
Dock - A water area where boats can make fast. The structure upon which you walk around the dock is a pier or wharf.
Downwind - A direction to leeward, with the wind
Ebb - The receding tide that is flowing toward the sea
Fathom - A nautical linear measurement equal to 6 feet, used for measuring water depth
fender - A cushioning device hung between the boat and dock or pier
Flood - The rising tide that is flowing toward land
Fore - Located at the front of the boat, fore and aft means front and back
Founder - To sink below the surface of the water
Freeboard - The vertical distance between the waterline and the top of the deck
Gaff - a handle hook used to boat large fish
Galley - The kitchen on a boat
Gel Coat - The standard finish of a fiberglass boat
Give Way Vessel - The boat that does not have the right of crossing or overtaking situation
Hail - To call another boat
Harbor - A safe protected anchorage for docking and loading
Hatch - An opening in the deck
Head - Toilet
Heading - The compass direction in which a boat is pointed
Helm - Where the steering wheel is located
High Tide - High water, the highest normal level reached
Hull - The main structural body of a boat
Inboard - Powerboat having an engine inside the hull
Jetty - A structure projecting out from the shore to influence the current or tide or protect a harbor
Keel - The main structure member of a boat extending along the center of the bottom; the lateral area beneath the hull

Slip - A berth for a boat
